MICCAI 2012 Workshops and Challenges - Call for Papers

MICCAI 2012, the 15th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention, will be held from 1st to 5th October 2012 at the Acropolis Convention and Exhibition Centre in Nice, France. On October 1st and October 5th, MICCAI 2012 will host 29 workshops and challenges and 4 tutorials on focused aspects related to Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Interventions

We invite you to submit papers and to participate to these events. The submission deadlines are generally end of May/early June with an author notification acceptance early July. Proceedings/material of all workshops/challenges/tutorials will be distributed to participants on a USB memory device.

In the abdomen, organs and disease appearances are complex and subtle, and thus the development of computational models that are useful in clinical practice is highly challenging. Nevertheless, diagnosis often relies on the quantitative measures of organs and lesions, because their volumes and shapes are strong indicators of disorders. Given the complexity and high variability of abdominal organs, the identification of distinct computational challenges for integrative models of organs and abnormalities are essential for understanding anatomy and disease, evaluating treatment, and planning intervention.

This fourth international workshop aims to provide a comprehensive forum for reviewing clinical opportunities in computational abdominal imaging, and for sharing state-of-the-art as well as emerging techniques for solving computationally challenging image analysis and visualization problems, by bringing together leading researchers and clinician-scientists around the world. The workshop will provide participants in-depth and interactive discussions on the emerging techniques introduced by the current clinical challenges that have not been fully explored in the MICCAI main conference. We solicit original and review papers that address innovative research and development in the following four growing fields: virtual colonoscopy, computer-aided diagnosis, abdominal intervention, and computational anatomy.

This workshop aims to bring together researchers in the field of endovascular stenting procedures in different anatomical regions. While researchers concerned with cerebral, coronary, carotid, and aortic stenting have mostly published within their corresponding anatomy, the proposed MICCAI-STENT Workshop will provide a platform for scientific discussion on stent-related research across anatomical boundaries and will eventually be the basis for forming a specialized subcommunity within MICCAI.

MICCAI-STENT will also feature an invited talk of a vascular surgery expert who will report on recent changes in the medical workflow of stenting procedures. In addition, we will bring together experts from medical and engineering domain (academia and representatives of industry) and initiate a panel discussion on the future of computer-assisted stenting. We invite submission of papers presenting new techniques for every aspect of computational assistance for stenting procedures regardless of their anatomical area (cardiac, aortic, cerebral, etc.).

The proliferation and increased reliance on high-resolution, multimodality biomedical images present significant challenges for a broad spectrum of clinical practitioners and investigators throughout the clinical and research communities. However, the impact of these new technologies in both time-critical clinical applications and high-throughput research pursuits depends, in large part, on the speed and reliability with which the imaging data can be visualized, analyzed and interpreted. High-performance computing (HPC) and distributed computing infrastructures (DCI) ranging from multi-core CPUs, GPU-based processing, parallel machines, Grids and Clouds are effective mechanisms for addressing these challenges.

The workshop on Data- and Compute-Intensive Clinical and Translational Imaging Applications will build on existing collaborative efforts in understanding current trends in HPC/DCI medical imaging research. It will demonstrate and encourage open discussion regarding the current status and latest developments in the field; explore new ideas/motifs, identify the challenges which currently impeded wider adoption of these technologies in image-assisted translational research, clinical intervention and decision-making, and present innovative solutions to the challenges.

Deep Brain Stimulation Methodological Challenges (DBSMC 2012)

The aim of this interdisciplinary workshop is to create a forum for the presentation and discussion of advanced methods for preoperative planning of surgical Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). DBS is a neurosurgical procedure that is fast gaining acceptance as an effective treatment of movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Preoperative planning for DBS is challenging, as it has to accurately define the location of the anatomical structure to stimulate and find the optimal position for the electrode that does not affect other structures, taking into account possible brain shift. Expected participants are young and experimented scientists and clinicians.

Diffusion MRI provides a non-invasive window into the organization of the white matter of the brain. DTI based tractography holds promise for using this information for assessing major white matter pathways for planning of neurosurgical procedures. The MICCAI DTI Tractography Challenge aims at accelerating the transfer of advanced tractography algorithms to clinical routine. The second edition of this workshop will provide new data sets with state of the art clinical acquisitions. The primary objective of the challenge is solving real life neurosurgical problems by analyzing peritumoral white matter organization. Software-based DTI phantoms will be used for validation purposes. The workshop will provide an overview of cutting-edge tractography methods developed by the MICCAI community, and a forum for discussion and feedback from clinicians.

Diagnostic decision making (using images and other clinical data) suffers from a lack of quantitative tools and measurements. Traditionally, decision making has involved using evidence provided by the patient's data coupled with a physician's a priori experience of a limited number of similar cases. With advances in electronic patient record systems, a large number of pre-diagnosed patient data sets are now becoming available. These datasets are often multimodal consisting of images (x-ray, CT, MRI), videos and other time series, and textual data. Researchers are now beginning to use techniques of content-based retrieval to search for disease-specific information in modalities to find supporting evidence for a disease or to automatically learn associations of symptoms and diseases.

In this workshop we hope to bring together researchers in medical imaging, medical image retrieval, data mining, text retrieval, and machine learning/AI communities to discuss new techniques of multimodal information extraction/ image retrieval and their use in clinical decision support. We are looking for original, high-quality submissions that address innovative research and development in the analysis, search and retrieval of multimodal medical data (X-ray, MRI, CT, echo videos, time series data) as well as machine learning technologies for extraction of disease correlations in the multimodal data.

After the first two successful workshops on 'Modeling and Monitoring of Computer Assisted Interventions (M2CAI)', the third M2CAI workshop aims to continue the already established forum for discussing advanced methods for acquisition, analysis, modeling, and monitoring of surgical/ interventional processes. The workshop is in response to the constant advances in surgical technologies. The operating room (OR) needs to be regularly adapted to meet future requirements in terms of appearance, ergonomics and operability. For an efficient context-aware OR, all the systems used should be fully integrated. A detailed analysis of the surgical workflow is therefore necessary and involves representation, formal understanding and statistical modeling and analysis of surgical processes. We need to address behavioral, anatomical, pathological aspects as well as instrument usage. This will facilitate the assessment of surgical skills, optimize the management in the OR and establish a new generation of context-aware Computer Assisted Intervention (CAI) systems.

The goal of the Multimodal Brain Tumor Segmentation (BRATS) challenge is to gauge the current state-of-the-art in automated brain tumor segmentation and compare between different methods. For this purpose, we are making available a large dataset of brain tumor MR scans, acquired at two different centers, in which the tumor and edema regions have been manually delineated. In addition, we also provide realistically generated synthetic brain tumor datasets for which the ground truth segmentation is known.

A large part of the available brain scans will be made available in April 2012 for algorithmic tweaking and tuning. Segmentation results should be submitted July 2012, validated quantitatively against the corresponding manual segmentations, along with a brief description of the method that was used. On the day of the challenge itself, the remaining scans will be made available and analyzed on the spot by each team, after which the methods will be ranked according to their performance. The challenge day will conclude with a round-table discussion of the obtained results as well as invited talks by clinical experts. In the weeks following the challenge all participants will be invited to contribute to a joint paper describing and summarizing the challenge outcome, which we will then submit to a high-impact journal in the field.

Many strategies for medical image analysis have been built on an image analysis pipeline that starts with acquired image data, performs filtering and processing, constructs geometric models of important surfaces and structures, performs simulation, and finally provides quantitative and visual analysis of the data. The topic of the workshop is broadly based on three overlapping topics: Mesh processing, the image-to-mesh (I2M) pipeline, and surface analysis and extraction.

While numerous I2M technologies have been developed, rarely do they get sufficient exposure for out-of-field researchers to have the necessary expertise to know the nuances between them. Similarly, researchers in geometry, meshing, and surfacing often consider their problems in independent settings, external to their use in a specific imaging pipeline. In particular, there is a need for designing novel technologies that strictly focus on medical image domains. This workshop proposes to improve the cross-pollination of the imaging and meshing efforts by considering how meshing fits into the end-to-end pipeline from image acquisition to clinical analysis. A non-exhaustive list of topics of interest includes: Mesh representations, generation, extraction, visualisation and processing; Image-to-mesh pre-processing, conversion, and post-processing; Surface representation, extraction, matching, and analysis.

Prostate MR Image Segmentation Challenge (PROMISE12)

Teams (research groups, companies, etc.) who are developing a segmentation algorithm can register and download multi-center, multi-vendor training data from the challenge website to train their algorithms. Training data will be made available to registered participants in April with corresponding expert annotations. Test data (without expert annotations) will be made available to participants in June. The segmentation results of the algorithms on the test data can be submitted, including a short paper explaining the algorithm. The segmentations will be automatically evaluated against a reference standard. The performance of the algorithm will be automatically computed and used to provide a rank in the results section. At MICCAI 2012 there will also be a live challenge, where participants will evaluate their algorithms live on new, unseen data. Participants will then vie for the top prize at Nice on October 1, 2012 on site. Evaluation of the results will be done on site. Following the completion of the Grand Challenge competition, PROMISE12 will remain online to allow for participants to download and use the data.

Diffusion MRI provides a unique insight into the microstructure of living tissue and enables in-vivo connectivity mapping of the brain. Microstructural changes are often the earliest signs of disease or tissue regeneration, as well as being manifestation of physiological processes in normal tissue functioning. Tractography and connectivity mapping give fundamental new insights in neuroscience and neuroanatomy. The variety of clinical applications is expanding rapidly and includes detection of lesions and damaged tissue, prognosis of functional impairment and neurosurgical planning.

New processing methods are essential for addressing issues at each stage of the diffusion MRI pipeline: acquisition, reconstruction, modeling and model fitting, image processing, fiber tracking, connectivity mapping, visualization, group studies and inference. This workshop welcomes novel computational techniques, refinements that clearly advance the state of the art, new insights on the relationship between existing techniques, as well as studies on validation and clinical applications. This year, it also provides a forum for papers on, and live demos of, open source software packages that support the complex diffusion MRI processing pipeline.

Analysis of histopathology images is growing in importance with the recent advent of whole slide imaging scanners. Automated analysis of patterns obtained with microscopic imaging is improving diagnosis and grading of cancer and other diseases, for instance in histopathology using multi-staining and multi-spectral techniques. This workshop aims to bring together computer scientists, clinicians, and industrial vendors of digital pathology equipments to discuss (1) the clinical challenges and open problems, (2) present the state-of-the-art research in quantitative image analysis and visualization methods for digital pathology, diagnosis, and prognosis from H&E and IHC stained, multi-parametric imaging, (3) advances in data fusion methods between pathology and other disciplines (including radiology, genomics, and proteomics), and (4) advances in whole slide tissue and multi-spectral imaging technology.

We invite submissions that address specific problems related to imaging and image analysis of tissue specimens. We particularly welcome contributions that identify or address challenges for the mainstream approval of automated histology imaging and in situ in vivo image analysis, or provide solutions to the related problems such as mosaicking, and multispectral analysis.

This workshop aims at exploring the use of modern computer vision technology in tasks such as automatic segmentation and registration, localization of anatomical features and detection of anomalies. It emphasizes questions of harvesting, organizing and learning from large-scale medical imaging data sets and general-purpose automatic understanding of medical images. We are especially interested in modern, scalable and efficient algorithms which generalize well to previously unseen images and which can potentially be applied to large-scale data sets arising, for example, from longitudinal studies with significant populations, acquired through wide field-of-view imaging sequences with high-resolution, or being compiled over time in hospital-scale databases.

We encourage the submission of original papers that propose new methodology strongly motivated by a clinical application. Submissions will be at the interface of computer vision, machine learning and medical imaging analysis, transitioning 2D computer vision methods to 3D medical imaging data, or approaches that solve established tasks in medical image analysis through algorithms from computer vision.

Objective: Discussion will focus on new methods/applications of multi-atlas labeling and comparative evaluations of multi-atlas labeling methods. We will host a challenge on whole-brain labeling which will provide an opportunity to characterize multiple labels, inter-label relationships, and heterogeneous structures.

The aim of the NeoBrainS12 challenge is to compare (semi-)automatic algorithms for segmentation of neonatal brain tissues using T1- and T2-weighted MRI scans of the brain. Papers should include a description of the segmentation method as well as the results obtained using the test data available on the NeoBrainS12 webpage. Submitted papers are limited to maximum 8 pages (suggested length: 4 pages) following MICCAI submission guidelines.

Please note that in conjunction with MICCAI 2012 a Workshop on Perinatal and Paediatric Imaging (PaPI 2012) will take place.
Submissions to NeoBrainS12 evaluating algorithms presented at the PaPI 2012 workshop are allowed, as well as submissions containing already published or elsewhere submitted algorithms.

This workshop combines two tracks: original research papers and a challenge component. The original research paper track invites full-length MICCAI format papers on all aspects of computational neuroimaging analysis methodology, as applied to the problems of early diagnosis, disease progression monitoring and treatment evaluation in AD and related disorders. The challenge component will compare methods for measurement of longitudinal brain atrophy in terms of symmetry, transitivity, and reproducibility. Sparsity Techniques in Medical Imaging

Sparsity based compressive sensing and sparse learning have been widely investigated and applied in machine learning, computer vision, computer graphics and medical imaging. In the medical community, these methods have been used successfully to speed up MR scan time, MR image reconstruction, organ segmentation from CT and MRI and classification methods for diseases.

The goal of this workshop is to advance scientific research in sparse methods for medical imaging. It will foster dialog and debate in this relatively new field which includes Compressive Sensing (CS), Sparse Learning (SL) and their applications to medical imaging. The technical program will consist of previously unpublished and invited papers, with substantial time allocated for discussion.

This workshop will include, but is not limited to the following topics on sparse methods: Compressed Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Image/signal reconstruction, Image segmentation, Image registration, Anomaly detection and correction, Shape prior modeling, Statistical analysis, Convex optimization on sparsity priors, Group, structured and dynamic group sparsity.

Statistical Atlases and Computational Models of the Heart: Imaging and Modelling Challenges (STACOM 2012)

Open interfaces/frameworks increase the pace of research and discovery by promoting collaborations within and between clinicians, biomedical engineers, and software developers. These systems usually employ modular architectures to model the complexity involved in surgical assistance systems. Hence, standards are critical to allow for cross-framework interoperability of systems, and modules.

The goal of this workshop is to establish a forum for discussing systems and architectures for computer assisted intervention (CAI) applications. Continuing the success of the series, the workshop will focus on open interfaces, interoperability, and standards. In addition, this year, we will discuss clinical applications and future directions of CAI systems and frameworks. The workshop will continue to include the robust discussion between industry and academia.

From Minimally Invasive Image-Guided Interventions To Non-Invasive Ultrasound based Interventions

This full day tutorial is suitable both for the newcomer to image-guided interventions as well as established researchers from related fields. The tutorial is comprised of two sessions. The morning session provides a broad overview of the current state of technology, introducing the key elements of minimally invasive image-guided interventions. These include: imaging, segmentation, registration, tracking, visualization, and robotics. The afternoon session provides an overview of current research into ultrasound (US) guided minimally invasive and non-invasive procedures. The subjects include: use of US in neurosurgery, oncology, cardiology, and anesthesia, high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), motion compensation in HIFU, and use of US to facilitate targeted drug delivery.

Brain Connectivity Networks: Biology, Imaging and Beyond

Understanding connectivity from different modalities (structural and functional) is very challenging due to the complex underlying properties of the data, as well as the lack of ground truth that will help test the validity of the network models. This tutorial proposes to address the challenging issues of understanding the biological basis of brain connectivity, standardization and comparability of network models, aspects of multivariate data combination, and the validity of mathematical model generated numbers in the clinic. The talks (10) and the subsequent panel discussion would present the various aspects of connectivity exploration via imaging, discuss the biological basis of the same as well as build towards a "network analysis and QA protocol" that can be adopted for analysis of datasets with multivariate data.

We present a flexible model of decision forests and discuss how it can be used for a large variety of supervised and unsupervised tasks in machine learning and computer vision. Numerous examples will help explain and demonstrate how small variants of the basic forest model yield powerful algorithms for efficient: classification, regression, density estimation, manifold learning, semi-supervised learning and active learning. Details of exemplar real-world applications including human tracking in Microsoft XBox Kinect and semantic recognition of medical images are also presented.

Modeling and Analysis of Molecular Imaging

Physiological modeling is often applied in clinical diagnosis and research with molecular imaging modalities, such as PET and DCE-MRI. An image series is acquired with spatiotemporal information of molecular biomarker distribution inside the body and mathematical models are applied to estimate the underlying physiology-related metabolic parameters. Physiological modeling and analysis of molecular images benefit visualization of radiotracer metabolism, classification and tracking of patients' chemotherapy and treatment planning of radiotherapy, as well as drug discovery and development.

The purpose of this tutorial is to introduce recent developments related to this topic and provide an in-depth discussion for both new and experienced researchers. The tutorial will review various methodologies for kinetic modeling, computational simulations and analyses of molecular imaging, and encourage discussions by additional panels on the end. This covers mathematical modeling of dynamic image series, physiological modeling, model based image reconstruction and parametric reconstruction for diagnosis.
